Mixing at the Microscale for a Given Flow Rate
Media Details
Created 2/27/2002
The goal of this image is to visualize the mixing by diffusion of two fluorescent liquids at the microscale for a given flow rate. The 200-micron channels were manufactured inside a clear epoxy resin (EPON 828, Shell Chemical) cured with an aliphatiqc amine (EPI-CURE 3274, Shell Chemical). The two aqueous solutions were tagged with a green and red fluorescent dyes (Bright Dyes, Kingscote Chemicals) and flow at the fixed rate of 0.5 ml/hr. The mixing is visualized by the yellow color at the liquid interface. The picture was taken using the 2.5 x objective of the fluorescent microscope by Daniel Therriault, Ph.D. candidate of the Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering Department. This research sponsored by the AFOSR is part of the Self-Healing Research Group under the supervision of Dr. Scott White.
