Scanning electron microscope image revealing the seed surface of Abutilon theophrasti (common name: velvetleaf), a common and problematic weed of corn and soybean production in the U.S. Midwest. The image shows the relative spatial scale of bacterial and fungal colonization on the surface of velvetleaf seeds, which are 2 to 3 mm in length. This work supports ongoing research by Drs. Brian Schutte and Joanne Chee-Sanford, USDA-ARS Global Change and Photosynthesis Research Unit, Department of Crop Sciences, University of Illinois.
